Tributes pour in for Guy Ottley


Guy Ottley, a former president of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) was hailed as a very nice and caring individual at his funeral service at the San Fernando Open Bible Church on Thursday.

Ottley died suddenly in his sleep last Monday at the age of 82 but his lifestyle drew a large turnout of friends, family and well wishers, most of whom just wanted to pay their final respects to a man whose life would have touched them. In addition to being an educator, Ottley’s caring nature for people was highlighted in the eulogies done by his children and grandchildren.

He was a devoted family man and teacher, having taught at the San Fernando Senior Comprehensive School and Gasparillo Primary school. In 1978 he won a scholarship to the Leeds University in England. And due to his tremendous talents he also worked for Guardian Life in the area of sales.

In the area of sports Ottley served as vice president of the Secondary Schools Cricket League (SSCL) and played a pivotal role in the development of athletics.

His funeral was attended by a number of dignitaries including SSFL President William Wallace, Luke Quamina, a former national under-16 cricketer, Ephraim Serrette- NAAAs president, Forbes Persaud- former Chief Executive of the T&T Cricket Board, Emeritus Rohlehr- former principal at El Dorado Secondary and Dr Claude Dembo, among others.

Ottley was later cremated at Belgroves Funeral Home Crematorium in San Fernando.
